“Within each pillar, the prominent indicators are grouped into inputs of safety — such as personnel or policies dedicated to some aspect of security and outputs anything from air pollution levels to crime rates,” said the report.

The city of Toronto pushed itself from 6th position in 2019 to 2nd in 2021, thanks to the new environmental category. The city scored 82.2 out of 100, whereas Copenhagen scored 82.4. The scores are given based on the city’s plan for sustainable development, waste management, health care (especially in times of the Covid-19 pandemic), and more.
This year was quite different than the previous ones due to the pandemic that hit almost every part of the world. The survey also included the essential pillar of environmental security in 2021, which considers healthcare facilities and the physical environment in urban areas. The way the Canadian government responded to the Covid-19 pandemic helped the city of Toronto to secure its place in the world’s top 10 safest cities. The city also takes the lead in education, with the University of Toronto ranking second among public North American universities.
