Finland Proposes a Long-Term D Visa to Expedite the Entry of Researchers and Students
The Finnish Ministry of Interior has officially proposed a new Long-Term D visa for third-country researchers and students. The government has recently received an updated draft depicting the use of a Long-term D visa.
As per the latest amendments, the D visa can grant entry of third-country researchers, students, certified employees, senior executives, and their immediate family members. Earlier, the visa was restricted to foreign entrepreneurs, startup owners, and family members.
With this announcement, Finland aims to garner the attention of international students seeking a career abroad and strengthen Finland’s position in the international scientific community.
Finland Visa
The Finnish Immigration Service will issue this visa; therefore, those who have already obtained a residence permit can travel the country. It would speed up their entry into the country because of the reduced processing times. The Long-Term D visa will also benefit individuals whose residence card has been lost, stolen, or expired.
Another amendment in the draft allows the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to issue a temporary residence permit to nationals below 20 years whose family members serve in bureaucratic missions for Finland (Finland Startup Visa).
The proposal is a critical milestone in the Finnish economy as it would encourage the flow of migrant labor in the country. The measure will also promote education, work-based migration, and scientific innovations in Finland.
The final draft of the amendment will be presented to the Finnish parliament on April 1, 2022.
In 2021, Finland received 36,206 residence permit applications. The majority of applications were related to work, education, and family settlement. The number of applications received hit the highest record of all times, leaving behind 2020 that only saw 21,160 applications.
Moreover, the total number of applications filed under the work permit category reached 15,012 in 2021, while employed applications such as nurses, cleaners, cooks, and restaurant workers reached 8,529. Out of all, 1,293 residence permits were issued under the skilled worker category to Russia, India, and China nationals.
The Finish government pays special attention to streamlining the work permit application process and entry procedures. The government wishes to make Finland an attractive destination for talented foreign workers seeking a better and high-quality life in Europe.
